White Elephant Museum
Over 200 Community Artifacts
Step back in time at the White Elephant Museum, a historic gem built in 1915 as part of the Moravian Mission. Originally intended as a boarding school, its limited space earned it the nickname “White Elephant.” Today, it stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of Makkovik.
Nestled beside the Moravian Church and the scenic Moravian Woods, the museum offers visitors a chance to explore rugged walking trails and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area. Inside, you’ll find a treasure trove of history, including a large video library from the James R. Andersen collection, showcasing community life and traditions.
The museum is open from July 1 to August 30, with tours available upon request during the off-season. For off-season inquiries, please call +1 (709) 923-2262.
