Strathcona House

Explore The History

Step back in time and experience the remarkable story of Lord Strathcona House, a replica of the grand residence once owned by Donald Smith, an influential officer of the Hudson’s Bay Company. As the chief trader overseeing operations throughout Labrador, Smith made the trading post in Rigolet his headquarters. Later known as Lord Strathcona, he played a historic role in driving the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Quebec.

Praised as “the grandest house in all of Labrador,” this iconic site now stands proudly as a Cultural Interpretation Centre in Rigolet. It offers visitors the chance to connect with the region’s vibrant history and heritage, serving as a hub for learning and exploration for both the local community and tourists alike.
